C.O.P.D.

copd

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease affects more people these days than you can imagine. Everywhere you look anymore you see someone who has got COPD or a form of it. You see people having trouble breathing and can hardly catch their breath, doing nothing but walking a few feet and they are worn out.

A great number of people who have COPD has to use oxygen just to live. Sad but true. What can they do about it and can it be reversed? This and a few more questions are going to be answered here.

The 3rd most common cause of death in the U.S.

What is C.O.P.D?

First thing lets start off by telling you what COPD is and stands for.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is an obstructive disease of the lungs which covers many different categories. This makes it hard for you to get air out of the lungs, which makes it hard to get air in.

If you cannot get all the air out of your lungs when you exhale then you can’t get enough fresh air back in.

COPD is a progressive disease and gets worse over time. This is associated with never ending breathing problems. This will eventually make everyday activities difficult to do, such getting dressed and walking or doing normal deeds like cooking and housework.

COPD can cause our bodies to have other problems by becoming weak and tired.

Chronic bronchitis and Emphysema are types of COPD.

Symptoms

Wheezing and tightness in their chest

Mucus in the lungs – coughing up sputum

Shortness of breath – common symptom with most people

Not able to take a deep breath – due to decreased lung function

A cough that doesn’t go away – persistent coughing

Causes

Environmental pollutants – being around constant dirty and dusty places

Genetics – the inherited risk factor in genetics is in alpha 1- antitrypsin deficiency (AAT)

Smoking – cigarette smoking and secondhand smoke

Workplace exposures – being exposed to chemicals in the workplace

Air pollution – outdoor trash burning

COPD Diagnosis

How are we diagnosed? Well, a doctor can diagnose you with COPD. Is the doctor right, maybe not many cases go misdiagnosed. They may be told they have COPD and it is bronchitis or another lung condition.

However, there are some who don’t get diagnosed until it’s past repair. Getting the right diagnosis the first time is essential. So a person should get more than one checkup for different tests.

It’s a safe bet that if you get diagnosed for COPD you want to be sure it’s right or if you get diagnosed with some other lung condition you want to know that it is the right diagnosis.

Our best determination when it comes to any lung condition is getting the right diagnosis the first time. Because which diagnosis it is could mean a longer life with good health.

COPD Management andTreatments

What are some of the treatments involved with COPD?

Pulmonary Rehabilitation -Trying to improve the quality of life with……….

  • Reducing the trips to the hospital over COPD related issues
  • Exercise and physical conditioning program
  • Motivating self-control over management and daily functions
  • Decreasing in the complications and symptoms
  • Oxygen therapy is used in many cases because when the lungs can’t transfer enough oxygen into the blood we have to supplement the oxygen.
  • Medications inhaled through bronchodilators and nebulizers
  • Avoid getting infections is one of the things a COPD patient has to try their best to do. Wash hands often and avoid people with colds.

New Treatment! Stem Cell

The new treatment I been studying on that may eventually be a cure.

Stem cell treatment uses our own body to help repair itself. How is this done, by taking our own stem cells and putting them back in our body to start the healing process?

The process is done by taking adult stem cells and returning back to the patient. They can promote the lung tissue healing and return the lungs back to an improved lung function.

The stem cells can be taken from the blood or bone marrow. They sort them out and return them back to the body intravenously. After they are returned to the body healing process has a chance to begin.

Once they are put back into the body on the right side where the heart is it pumps the blood into the lungs for normal cells they are distributed through the other parts of the body. Stem cells are a little different they get trapped in the lungs this is called pulmonary trap

This process helps slow down the progression of chronic lung disease.

 Different forms of COPD?

There are different lung diseases that are forms of COPD.

Emphysema is a form of COPD.

Chronic Bronchitis is a form of COPD

Asthma is a form of COPD – refractory (non-reversible) asthma by COPD foundation is a form.

Mesothelioma may not be a form of COPD, It could get the wrong diagnosis to be COPD.

Other lung infections may be diagnosed as COPD, but can be healed and are not COPD.

  1. Wow what an in-depth analysis of a condition that I myself knew very little about. I do have one question though, are they’re any more natural remedies to prevent or repair?

    • Thanks for the comment Andrew, as I know of no. You can buy some supplements that you can take that might help some, but if you got COPD they wont repair.

  2. I know a relative who has emphysema but I had no idea that this was a type of COPD. This is a very difficult condition because breathing is very important to how we function and when it becomes limited it is very difficult. When you read this it gives you such a greater understanding of how and why this is. It is all about a proper lifestyle and prevention. Thanks for such a comprehensive article!

    • You are welcome and thanks for the comment. I know Melissa first hand how people suffer with COPD, my wife has it and she struggles everyday. Still looking for that miracle treatment that will heal her.

  3. Thank you for such an informative post. I learned something new today! I have been a diagnosed asthmatic for over 40 years and never realised it was classed under COPD.

    • Thanks for the comment Megan, and I may have classified as form of COPD which I need to make it more clear. I believe it is a form of COPD, here is a quote from the COPD foundation “Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an umbrella term used to describe progressive lung diseases including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, refractory (non-reversible) asthma, and some forms of bronchiectasis. This disease is characterized by increasing breathlessness”. Now to me that shows it is a form of COPD.
