It has been around ever since the ancient Egyptians. So, it’s not new, it’s just not recognized like it should be.

What is Gout?

Actually, Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis. It is accompanied by

recurring attacks of red, tender, hot, and swollen joints. One of the most

common joints affected is the at the base of the big toe in about half of

the cases. It usually comes with frequent pain when it acts up. It can

actually be said that the defective metabolism of uric acid causes arthritis.

What are Gout Symptoms

Gout comes in many different ways, most commonly in the form of a recurring attack of acute inflammatory arthritis. The metatarsal-phalangeal joint at the base of the big toe is affected most commonly. There are many symptoms and treatments for gout.

Redness – inflammation of the joints

Swelling – of the affected area or joint

Tenderness – around the joint or affected area

Stiffness – the affected joints

Pain – in all the areas affected

Causes

The main causes of Gout symptoms are the excessive amount of uric acid in the blood. This uric acid crystalizes with high levels in the blood. This can occur, because of diet, genetically or underexcretion of uric acid by the kidneys. What are some of the reasons for this?

Genetically – gout not always, but usually is genetically through genes. The SLC2A9, SLC22A12, and ABCG2 genes are found to be associated with gout. If someone else in your family has got Gout, then you are more likely to get it.

Lifestyle – our diets make up about 12{0580942254a8404b9cbb1b1bb95a6f06e3c05404a4a3e100977df26e356e3e53} of all Gout patients

Medical conditions – if you have other medical problems then you are subject to get Gout. Things such as psoriasis, hypertension, kidney failure, and obesity. There are many others that can contribute to the cause of gout.

Diet

High purine foods can cause Gout because uric acid is caused by the breakdown of purines. What are some of the foods you can eat?

Grains

Nuts

Fruit

Non-fat dairy products

Vegetables

Foods you should avoid…….

Seafood

Red meats

Cut back on high fructose corn syrup such as……….

Processed foods

Soft drinks

Ice cream and candy

Treatments

Non-steroidal inflammatory drugs

Steroids

colchicine

All these improve symptoms along with changing your lifestyle

Preventions

Maintaining a healthy weight – gradually losing body weight will lower the uric acid levels in the body, this is not to rapidly lose weight or fast. That can raise uric acid levels.

Avoid alcohol – at all cost, because alcohol can increase the risk of gout. Ask your doctor for advice on how much you can intake.

Limit the amount of red meats, poultry or fish – If either of them bothers you in any way then avoid completely.

Drink plenty of liquids –  especially water or liquids that won’t harm you, avoid the ones with high fructose corn syrup.

What else will Gout Affect?

With high levels of uric acid in the blood, urate crystal can build-up in the urinary tract causing kidney stones.

  • Food is the greatest medicine around. Thank you for this informative article. I also encourage people to eat right before they get in trouble with health issues.

    • Thanks for you comment, eating right plays a major role in our health. We should always consider what goes into our body.
I appreciate you reading this article, if there is anything else I can help you with leave me a comment below and I will get back to you. Sign-up on my newsletter for any updates.

  • Wow, who would have thought that Black Cherry juice and celery seed extract could work so quickly to get rid of gout? Wonderful information. Our Uncle had gout, and it was so hard to get him to stop using Accent (MSG) on all of his food. It really does come down to what you put into your body!

    • Thank you for the comment, many people have their own ways of dealing with health conditions. They are not always the best, that's where spreading this information around comes in to play, by word of mouth or the internet.

  • Hi Fred
Thank you for the information on this condition. I remember working with a guy years ago who had this and I never understood what it was. He would often have time off for it. I had never realised it was part of the arthritis family. I have arthritis in my wrist and hip from a car accident many years ago - would this put me at increased risk of gout?

    • Thanks for the comment Megan, yes this could very well put you at greater risk. I think it is inherited more than out of the blue getting it. If you have the right genes your are more susceptible to it. If someone in your family has it then I might worry a little, if not I think you will be alright.

  • I know three people close to me that have experienced issues with gout. One of my friends was only 21 when he experienced it and it was due to heavy drinking ( I guess turning that magical number 21 put him into overdrive lol). My brother also had issues with it due to eating too many citrus fruits. He loooooves oranges (his feet did not). My other friend actually experienced crippling gout for months on end and lost several months of work due to it. I'd never heard of, much less seen, gout cause the kind of physical pain and restrictions that it did with her. She followed a very strict diet with no red meats, alcohol, or soda like you mentioned above and was on very strong steroids to bat! It was crazy!

    • Thanks for the comment, Jennifer. I don't hear of very many people that have Gout, but I do have a family member with it. So you have some experience with it through family members also. This is something that is a serious problem if it affects you. I guess sometimes we can do what we can to not get a health condition and it still isn't enough. But we still got to try.

  • Hello Fred,

Arthritis runs in my family and I’m eager to learn everything about it and search for ways to prevent getting this disease and related kinds of diseases. I also search for ways how to relieve the pain and if there are possibilities to get rid of arthritis. Your post about gout is really interesting and brings it to the point. The video is a great addition to your post.

The tips on what kind of food to eat and to avoid eating for overcoming gout are very helpful. I believe these tips are also beneficial for other kinds of arthritis. What do you think about that?

    • Thanks for the comment, Pernilla, I appreciate you taking the time to read and learn about arthritis. Arthritis really can do more than affect our joints as you know inflammation does a number on all our body. In arthritis, it gets in the joints and can stop us dead in our tracks if not attended to. All arthritis remedies or let's say treatments can work for each type in some ways.
