These membranes or tissues surrounds the lungs and the lining of the chest cavity. Pleurisy or pleuritis results from inflammation of the pleura.

The inflammation is caused by a disease like cancer or from an injury.

Inflammation of the pleura could be caused by autoimmune disorders or some kind of infection.

Anything that can cause inflammation in the body is to be avoided.

Nowadays antibiotics and medicine pretty much take care of all the infections that cause pleurisy.

  • I just wanted to leave a quick note to say some great info there Fred,
I've often found that I've a heavy cheat and a LOT of the symptoms I have are like a big flem on my chest.

Citrus fruits always seem to help me.

    • Thanks for the comment, Tony. I'm glad that you have an understanding of this condition that affects the lungs and chest. And that you also know that citrus fruits due to their anti-inflammatory properties help pleurisy.

  • Hi Fred,
Very helpful article! I was looking for some info about chest pain and I am glad I ran across your site. Currently, I have been having lung issues and can't take a cold shower. Most of the time, I have to turn off the air condition during this summer.
I also start taking Tumeric at the advice of a friend and see good results. I was happy to see you included info on this site.
    Thanks for sharing!

    • Thanks for the comment, Maun. I appreciate you taking the time to read this article because it may help your chest pain you been having. I am glad that you are using Tumeric for the pain this could solve the problem for you.

  • Before I read your article I thought pleruisy was a life threatening disease! I'm so glad I read through your info. lol. It's pretty amazing that you can treat this problem naturally with so many different things! I love how everything we need to cure disease(s) can be found in nature. I especially liked the turmeric idea. Turmeric is amazing! I've often incorporated that awesome little plant into my juices! How cool to find something ELSE it's used for! Thanks for the write up Fred and for always being available to answer any questions I may have!

    • Thanks, for the comment, Jennifer. Yes, pleurisy Is an odd name but it comes from the word pleura that means the lungs or pertaining to them. It's not usually a killer condition especially not these days with the medicine we have today. But now we know that this can be treated naturally and that's the best for our health.

  • Hi Fred, I think the length of your articles is just right to give people the information they need and it's easy to take in, and more crucially remember. Pleurisy can be quite serious when left untreated so it's good to know the symptoms.

It sounds like a nasty disease, but it's good to know there are treatments available. I especially love the fact you have listed turmeric in there as one of those treatments...honestly, is there anything turmeric can't do? It's just such a great anti-inflammatory that has now been proven over and over again to be as effective, if not more so, than drugs.

Thanks for doing your best to keep us all healthy!

    • Thank you, Stefanie, for your good words on the post. Pleurisy is a nasty condition that can be terrifying when you have it. When we have chest pain and not sure why the doctor or emergency room is where we should go immediately. If we are diagnosed with pleurisy then treatment is all we can do.

  • Hi Fred,
Thanks for another great and informative article. It is amazing how much I have learned from your site. I have heard of pleuritis before but not this extensive. It is so important to see a doctor when you have chest pain because you never know what it can be. Thanks for the info!

    • Thanks for the comment, Melissa. Pleuritis and pleurisy one and the same even though it might pleurisy butter get to the doctor to be sure. Because heart attacks are one of the number one killers today. Don't take chances.

  • this is a really interesting and informative article. I note you said that 'If your pleurisy is caused by an infection then the doctor would give you antibiotics' but you also mentioned that it can be caused by a viral infection. I take it the antibiotics are only given if it is bacterial?

    • Thanks for the comment, Amy. Yes with it being a viral or a bacterial infection the antibiotics are for the bacterial infection. This is a hard condition to diagnose.

  • Another great, informative article Fred. I love the way you have given some great natural cures such as Tumeric. That spice has amazing properties! We really need to get back to what our ancestors did and utilise these natural foods to assist our health and recovery.

    • Thank you, Megan, for the comment. Just imagine if the whole world went back to natural cures and more than that eat like they did in the older days. No more major sicknesses and diseases or a lot less.
