- When we can’t cover up then we have to use bug repellent that is put on our skin and clothing.

The summer is here and the bugs are coming out more so this post is perfect. Also, I am planning on moving to Alaska in August and they have a lot of mosquitos so I thank you for this post. I am not a fan of bugs(who is) but mosquitos are the worst. Okay, maybe not the worst. I like the idea of an organic bug repellent so I will be sure to purchase plenty of it. Thanks!
Thanks, Melissa for the comment. You know mosquitoes are pretty irritating insects and carry many diseases. Though we have to be in their environment we got to learn how to repel them for our safety.
Hey Fred! I love the idea of planting things around the house to naturally deter bugs like lemongrass. I’ll have to give that a try. Thanks for the link too to make my own natural bug spray. The ingredients are easy to find and the recipe looks very easy to make. What are your thoughts on deet? I’d heard a lot of bad things but when I googled it I read that there aren’t any proven reasons to NOT use it, what’s your take? I still use it whenever I’m in the yard. Thanks!
Thanks, for the comment Jennifer. Natural is the way to go in using bug spray. Deet is a chemical that has been deemed safe for kids when used as directed. Too much can be absorbed through the skin and is not recommended for children under 3. I would prefer homemade natural bug spray only to stay away from the chemicals. Deet should not be used no more than once a day and avoid hands and face area with it.
Hi Fred, yes bugs can truly be a pest and totally ruin the summer for you if you’re not careful. I really learnt some brilliant ways to avoid this from your article which is great because I am one of those people that mosquito’s just love to feast on, maybe I have sweet blood or something.
Anyway, I love the idea of spraying the trees and bushes around your house with bug repellent. The guy in your picture looked like he was a professional using an industrial spray or something which is something that I have never seen in the UK, nor do I think we have such services so I’m presuming there is not much call for it here.
But I will for sure be using your idea of putting clothes into a hot drier to kill remaining bugs. Thanks
Thank you, Stefanie, for the comment. Them darn mosquitoes like me awful well too. If there is one around anywhere it gets on me. That was just a generic picture of a guy spraying trees. You can do your own spraying if needed. If you do have a mosquito and tick problem where you live or when you are outside It’s much safer to make your own spray.
I lived in Alaska for 22 years, so I know how pesky mosquitoes can be. Now the issue here is fleas. My dogs get a flea pill every month, and I do take precautions by spraying the yard, as I definitely do not want these in my yard, and then in the house. I am do to spray again. I will take a look at the products you have listed, thanks!
Thank you, Leahrae, for the comment. I have never been to Alaska I would think it was cold and there wouldn’t be fleas but I guess I’m wrong with that.
I have animals or cats and a dog and have a problem with fleas also. We use flea pills and flea baths with our dog and still have problems. I suspect it’s because of the cats. Flea sprays will help the outside area but would have to be done often at least once a week.
Thank you for sharing! I have children and pets and we lived next to the woods. needless to say mosquitos and ticks are a nightmare. I am going to look more into the lemon grass. I have not tried that method.
Thanks, Rikki, for the comment. Just as I do the damp woods make mosquitoes terrible where I live. If you go outside for any period of time chances are that you are going to get bit. Any natural mosquito spray is so much safer than ones that are mass produced.
Hi Fred,
Luckily in our part of the world we don’t have to worry about getting bites from mosquitos or ticks,it is a problem in the much hotter countries and your site has the answers.Well done Fintan
Thank you for the comment, Fintan, you must live in a cold climate then if not they would find you. I would say that you have other annoying things where ever you live if not then you are very lucky.
This is a great article, I currently have a mosquito problem around my house and I never really thought about spraying thing around the house down with repellant to keep them away. Thank for the good read look forward to seeing more articles from you in the future.
Thanks, Tony, for the comment. If you spray your grass, trees, and plant with mosquito spray it will cut down on them greatly. My yard is full of mosquitoes and I use spray regularly and I was amazed at how much it helped. Doing the little things we never think sometimes does the most good.
